Coney Island, the amusement and beach district on the southern tip of Brooklyn, is the subject named in this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that operated from about 1899 into the 1920s, supplied pictures to newspapers and magazines, and its files record many scenes from New York's public life. The record gives no firm date, and the title comes from the agency's own unverified caption cards, so the exact moment is uncertain. Still, the glass plate format points to the early twentieth century, when Coney Island drew huge crowds to its boardwalk, rides and bathing beaches.
