Elsie de Wolfe is the sitter named on this glass negative, which belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency Bain ran from the early 1900s, produced and sold images of notable people, and de Wolfe was a prominent figure in that world: an actress who became one of America's most influential interior decorators and a celebrated hostess in Paris and New York. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information that the Library notes is unverified, so the exact sitting remains uncertain. Still, the image reflects the agency's wider practice of documenting public figures of the period on glass plates.
