This glass negative pairs two names, Louis L. Schuyler and Virginia C. Gildersleeve, but the record does not say what brought them before the camera or when. Gildersleeve is the better-known of the two: she served as dean of Barnard College for decades and later was one of the few women delegates to the 1945 San Francisco conference that drafted the United Nations Charter. Bain News Service, the New York agency that supplied newspapers with photographs of people and events, made plates like this one, and the title comes from caption data the agency recorded and the Library has not verified.
