Louis Graveure appears here by name only, as the Bain News Service caption supplied it, and no verified date is recorded for this glass negative. Graveure was a baritone who built a concert career in Europe and the United States in the early twentieth century, when recital tours and phonograph records carried a singer's reputation far beyond the halls where he performed. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, sold photographs of notable people to newspapers, so portraits like this one were made for reproduction and show how performers were presented to the public in that era.
