The record links this glass negative to Herbert Witherspoon, an American bass who built a long career in concert halls and opera houses in the early twentieth century. He sang with the Metropolitan Opera for several seasons and was named the company's general manager in 1935, but he died later that same year. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose pictures of performers, politicians and other newsworthy people fill this collection, made the negative, though the sitter's identification is unverified and no date is recorded. Glass negatives like this one keep the fine detail of early press and studio work.
