The caption on this glass negative reads only "V. Herbert," and the name most likely refers to Victor Herbert, the Irish-born composer and conductor whose operettas, including *Babes in Toyland* and *Naughty Marietta*, were staples of the American stage in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, which George Grantham Bain ran in New York from about 1899 to 1920, sent photographers to theaters, concert halls and news events, so portraits of performers and public figures were routine in its files. The record gives no date, and the identification rests on a caption card that has not been verified, so the attribution should be treated as provisional.
