Fort Wadsworth sits on the Staten Island side of the Narrows, the strait that marks the entrance to New York Harbor, and its guns were part of the coastal defense system the United States built around the port from the 1800s onward. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, the archive of Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the agency's work from this period is valued for documenting everyday American places and events. Its title comes from caption information the agency itself supplied, which has not been independently verified.
