Fort Slocum sat on David's Island in Long Island Sound, off the coast of New Rochelle, New York, and by the time this glass negative was made it had served as an Army post for decades. The title names a medical corps, which places the scene among the Army's hospital and treatment staff at the post, though the record gives no date and the negative's details are unverified. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with images from the 1900s through the 1910s. Its glass plates, often captioned in haste, now offer a record of daily life in and around American military installations during those years.
