A man identified in the caption as a German internee sits at work on a knitted scarf at Fort Douglas, the Army post on the bench above Salt Lake City, Utah. During the First World War the post held German and Austro-Hungarian men detained as enemy aliens, and officials allowed handwork and other occupations to pass the long months of confinement. The picture came from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose glass negatives record American news from the early twentieth century. The caption is the agency's own and has not been independently verified, so the exact date and circumstances remain uncertain.
