Fort Slocum, on David's Island in Long Island Sound near New Rochelle, New York, was an Army post long before this glass negative was exposed, and the title "Gun Squad" points to the crew that served one of the post's artillery pieces. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work produced by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with photographs from the early 1900s until the 1920s. Its date is not recorded, and the title rests on caption information that has not been independently verified. Even so, the picture offers a close look at the drill and routine of coastal artillery men of that era, when such crews handled heavy guns by hand.
