Named here as Louis Botha, this glass negative shows a Boer commander who became the first prime minister of the Union of South Africa in 1910. The identification comes from caption information written by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold photographs of public figures to newspapers, and it has not been independently verified. Botha had led Boer forces in the South African War and later signed the Treaty of Versailles at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, so a portrait of him would have carried real news value for American readers.
