Bain News Service captioned this glass negative as "Gen. Picquart," though the record notes that the identification comes from unverified caption data. If it is correct, the sitter is Georges Picquart, the French army officer who became famous in the Dreyfus affair. In 1896 he found evidence pointing to Major Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy as the real traitor, and his insistence on the truth cost him his post and sent him into disgrace for several years. He was later vindicated, rose to general, and served as France's Minister of War in 1906 and 1907. Because the record gives no date, the portrait can be placed only in the broad early-twentieth-century period of Bain's work.
