German soldiers pose with Russian hand grenades, a kind of war trophy that was often displayed as evidence of battlefield gains. The Library of Congress notes that the title comes from Bain News Service data that has not been verified, so the exact place and date remain uncertain. Founded by George Grantham Bain, the agency supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives capture the wartime appetite for images of the front.
