The caption on this glass negative places Russian prisoners at Stettin, a title taken from Bain News Service caption cards and not independently verified. Stettin was a German Baltic port on the Oder River, now the Polish city of Szczecin, and during the First World War German authorities held large numbers of captured Russian soldiers in camps across the country. Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sold pictures of wartime scenes to newspapers, so images like this were made to be published and read quickly.
