Captured Uhlan cavalrymen at a place recorded as Guelzin are the subject of this glass negative, though the caption is unverified and the exact location and date remain uncertain. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency whose work fills the George Grantham Bain Collection, supplied the title. Uhlans were lancer cavalry in several European armies, and photographs of prisoners from that arm circulated widely in wartime press coverage of the early twentieth century, when agencies sent such images to American newspapers.
