The only identifying detail for this negative is the title "Cottrel," a surname the Library of Congress notes was taken from caption information it could not verify. The glass plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Caption cards from that operation were often written quickly, so names and dates should be checked against other sources before they are relied on. Plates of this size were a common working medium for press photographers of the period, which makes the negative a useful record of how news pictures were made before film took over.
