Few pictures in the Bain collection name their subject as plainly as this one does: a glass negative captioned "Russian Cossacks." The label comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold news pictures to newspapers in the early 1900s, and the notes flag that the title is unverified, so the exact men, place and occasion are not recorded. Cossack horsemen from the Russian Empire were a familiar sight in Western newspapers of that era, appearing in reports on the army, on imperial ceremonies and on unrest. Bain's glass plates were made for quick reproduction, so this negative offers a direct look at how such figures were presented to American readers.
