Here the subject is a churchman rather than a scene: a glass negative from the Bain News Service showing Giacomo della Chiesa, who was Pope Benedict XV from 1914 to 1922, though the record identifies him by his earlier title as Cardinal della Chiesa. Bain's studio, run by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied newspapers with photographs of news figures in the early twentieth century, and its negatives often arrived with handwritten caption cards that were not always checked. The catalog notes that this title is unverified, so the identification should be read with that in mind. Benedict XV led the Catholic Church through the First World War, when he called repeatedly for a negotiated peace, which makes portraits of him from this period worth a closer look.
