Pope Benedict XV, who led the Catholic Church from 1914 until his death in 1922, is the sitter named in this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures and current events in the early twentieth century, and its negatives often carried caption cards written in the newsroom. The title here comes from those unverified notes, so the exact date and occasion of the portrait are not recorded. Benedict's papacy spanned the First World War, when he pressed for negotiated peace and aid to civilians, which gives the image its historical weight.
