The caption pairs J.A. Gilmore, president of the Federal League, the short-lived rival to the established major leagues, with Charles Weeghman, the Chicago restaurateur who owned the league's Chicago Whales. Weeghman built the team's ballpark on the city's North Side, which later became Wrigley Field. The Bain News Service label gives no date, and the names come from unverified caption data, so the occasion and the sitting remain uncertain. The glass negative format and the Federal League connection both point to the years around 1914 and 1915.
