The name on this negative, "Chas. M. Pratt," is the only identifying detail in the record, and the Library of Congress notes that it comes from caption cards and has not been verified. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with news and portrait photographs in the early twentieth century. Its images were made on large glass plates, which were the standard medium for press work of that era, and the collection as a whole offers a broad view of American public life before the 1920s.
