Sir Charles Wakefield, identified on this negative as Lord Mayor of London, was a businessman who built the Castrol lubricant company before entering civic life. He held the mayoralty during the First World War, when London's civic leaders were heavily involved in war appeals and public fundraising. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, sold photographs of newsworthy people to newspapers, so this glass negative likely reflects that trade in topical portraits. The record gives no date, and the name comes from Bain caption cards that the Library of Congress describes as unverified.
