The sitter is named on the caption card as Gen. Sir B.T. Mahon, though the Bain News Service's identification is unverified and the record gives no date. Bryan Mahon, an Irish-born officer, led the 10th (Irish) Division at Gallipoli in 1915 and later held senior posts in Ireland during the unrest of 1919 to 1921. The Bain News Service, a New York press agency, supplied photographs of public figures to newspapers in the 1900s and 1910s, so the portrait likely reflects the wartime or postwar attention that made such officers newsworthy. The glass negative format of the collection also offers a window into how press portraits were made before film became standard.
