General Sir Ian Hamilton, whose name appears on this Bain News Service glass negative, is best remembered for commanding the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli in 1915. That Allied campaign aimed to open a sea route to Russia through the Dardanelles, but it ended in heavy casualties and a withdrawal. The Bain agency, based in New York, sold news pictures of prominent figures to newspapers, so portraits like this one show how quickly wartime leaders reached American readers. The identification comes from the caption information and has not been independently verified.
