The record names this glass negative for Gen. Dubail, a title the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives or caption cards and that has not been independently verified. The name points to a French army officer, and Bain's photographs of European military figures date largely from the period around the First World War, when American newspapers relied on wire-service pictures of Allied commanders. Because the negative carries no date, the exact occasion is unknown. Glass negatives like this one were the working medium of news photography of that era, so the image is valued less for its polish than as a record of how the press documented public figures.
