The sitter is General Sir James Willcocks, a British Army officer who spent much of his career in India and later led Indian troops on the Western Front during the First World War. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, so the portrait was likely made for wartime or press use. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency supplied and has not been independently verified. Even so, the image shows how British commanders were presented to the public during the war, when portraits of senior officers were widely circulated to inform readers about the conflict.
