Gen. Álvaro Obregón, a Constitutionalist commander whose forces helped defeat rival factions during the Mexican Revolution, is named as the subject, with the picture taken in El Paso. The border city sat across from Ciudad Juárez, and during the fighting of the 1910s it was a busy crossing point for officers, journalists, arms buyers and refugees, so American photographers often went there to record men shaping events across the river. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs widely, made the glass negative, and the title comes from its original caption data, which has not been independently verified.
