This portrait shows Count Terauchi Masatake, a Japanese army officer whose career spanned the country's expansion in East Asia. He served as Governor-General of Korea after Japan annexed the peninsula in 1910, and he later became prime minister from 1916 to 1918. The record gives the title only from caption data supplied by the Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency that distributed news pictures of public figures in the early twentieth century, so the exact occasion for the picture is not documented here.
