Gen. Count Terauchi Masatake, the Japanese army officer named in this glass negative, was a major political and military figure in the 1910s. He served as Governor-General of Korea after Japan annexed the country in 1910, and he became prime minister in 1916. The Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency, supplied pictures of newsworthy figures to newspapers, and this negative belongs to that body of work. The record gives no exact date, so the portrait is best read as a record of a leader whose career tracked Japan's expansion in East Asia.
