The record gives the sitter as "Gen. Count Luis Cadorna," but the Italian army commander of the First World War was Luigi Cadorna, and the Bain caption is unverified. Cadorna served as Italy's chief of staff from 1914 to 1917, directing repeated offensives against Austria-Hungary along the Isonzo front. He was removed from command after the Italian defeat at Caporetto in late 1917. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs, supplied many portraits of wartime figures like him to American newspapers.
