The caption on this glass negative reads "Count Benckendorf," a title the Bain News Service recorded from its own unverified notes, so the identification should be treated with some caution. The name most likely points to Count Alexander Benckendorff, who served as Russian ambassador to Britain from 1903 until the 1917 revolution ended the imperial government he represented. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied news photographs in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives document the diplomats, officials and public figures of that period.
