The name attached to this picture, Count Tamburini, comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote for its negatives, and the record does not confirm who he was or when the image was made. The medium is a glass negative, the standard format for press photographs in the early twentieth century, when photographers needed sharp images they could send to newspapers and print quickly. George Grantham Bain founded his New York agency around 1899 to supply news pictures to papers, and its archive now documents many of the people and events of that era. Because the title is unverified, it is best read as a working label rather than settled fact.
