Set in the cool pine-covered hills of Baguio in northern Luzon, this view shows the official summer residence of the governor-general of the Philippines, the American colonial administrator. Baguio's highland climate made it a retreat from the heat of Manila, and the government built its mountain station there in the early 1900s. The negative came from the Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency that supplied pictures of current events and places to newspapers. The title comes from the agency's caption cards, which were not verified, so the exact date is unknown, but the image still records how the American administration presented its colonial seat.
