The caption on this glass negative reads "Gen. V. Kessel," but the Library of Congress lists that title as unverified, so the sitter's identity and rank should be checked against other sources before anyone relies on it. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold pictures to newspapers in the early 1900s. Its glass plates were prepared for quick reproduction in print. Collections like this one show how press photographers recorded public figures of the period, often with little documented background about each sitter.
