The gallery's record identifies the subject only as "Lord Chelmsford," a title the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives or caption cards, and the cataloguers have not verified it. The name most often linked to the title is a British peer who held high office in the early twentieth century, but this record does not confirm which Chelmsford is shown or when the picture was made. The image survives as a small glass negative of 5 x 7 inches or less, the format the Bain agency used for its news work in New York. Those plates were made to be printed quickly and sent to newspapers, so the sitter's identity and the occasion are best checked against the caption cards and the agency's own files.
