The caption card gives this glass negative only one name, "Mme. Zarska," and the Bain News Service's own notes flag that title as unverified, so the sitter's identity and role remain uncertain. The "Mme." prefix was common for women in performance, fashion, and society in the early twentieth century, but the record does not say which applied here. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers, and its collection, now at the Library of Congress, holds tens of thousands of glass negatives made mostly between about 1900 and 1920. Pictures from that era often survive with thin documentation, so the image is best read as a portrait of a working period rather than a confirmed biography.
