Three named women share this glass negative: the actress Ethel Barrymore, the soprano Frances Alda, who is listed as "Mme. Alda," and a Mrs. O. Harriman, whose identity the record does not confirm. Barrymore was a leading Broadway and stage actress of the period, and Alda sang with the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the years before the First World War. The Bain News Service, run by George Grantham Bain, sold news and portrait photographs of prominent New Yorkers to newspapers and magazines in this era. The titles were written from the caption cards, so the names are worth checking against other sources before they are repeated.
