Recorded only as Mrs. W.K. Vanderbilt, a name the Bain News Service attached to its negatives without verification, this glass plate comes from a New York press archive. The Vanderbilt family was among the most conspicuous in Gilded Age society, and portraits of its women regularly appeared in newspapers of the period. George Grantham Bain's agency supplied news pictures to papers in the early twentieth century, so the plate shows how wealthy New Yorkers were presented to a public eager for their images. Because the sitter's identity is unconfirmed, check the caption against other sources before relying on it.
