Identified in its caption as Mme. J.J. Jusserand, this glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with news pictures in the early 1900s. Her husband, Jean Jules Jusserand, a scholar of English literature, served as France's ambassador to the United States from 1903 to 1925, and she was Julia Dent Grant, a granddaughter of President Ulysses S. Grant. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the sitter's identity is best read as the Bain office's own attribution.
