Few towns on the Western Front suffered as much as Dixmude, the Belgian town on the Yser whose church of St. Jean appears here. Fighting along the Yser in 1914 and the years that followed reduced much of the town to rubble, and churches were among the buildings battered by artillery. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, circulated views like this one to American readers following the war's aftermath. The record gives no date, so the picture is best read as part of the wider body of images showing European towns in ruin.
