The caption on this glass negative names Jean Henri Fabre, the French naturalist whose close observations of wasps, beetles and other insects made him one of the best-known entomologists of the nineteenth century. He spent much of his life at Sérignan-du-Comtat in Provence, where he studied insects in their natural habitat and recorded his findings in the multivolume *Souvenirs entomologiques*. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, made the negative. Its date is not recorded, and the identification rests on the caption cards rather than a verified source.
