Alton B. Parker is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds the work of the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that supplied newspapers with news pictures in the early twentieth century. Parker was a New York judge who ran as the Democratic candidate for president in 1904 and lost to Theodore Roosevelt. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency attached to the negative, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified, so the portrait's exact occasion remains uncertain.
