The sitter is recorded only as Mrs. F.B. Harrison, a name the Bain News Service took from its own caption cards, and the record does not confirm it. George Grantham Bain ran a New York picture agency in the early twentieth century that supplied news and portrait photographs to newspapers, and his glass negatives record both public figures and ordinary people. Glass plates were the standard working medium before flexible film replaced them, so the sharp detail typical of this format reflects the photographic practice of the period. Without a date, the portrait is best placed within the agency's active years rather than tied to a specific occasion.
