The sitter is identified only as Mrs. Schultz, a name the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, though the library notes that the title is unverified. The picture survives as a glass negative, a format photographers used widely for much of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth, prized for its sharp detail. George Grantham Bain built his New York news photo agency around the turn of the twentieth century, and his files now form a major part of the Library of Congress holdings. Without a firm date or further documentation, the portrait is best read as an example of the work of a busy commercial studio.
