Shot from the Upper Church, this view looks down on the park and town of Lourdes, the French Pyrenean town that became a major pilgrimage destination after Bernadette Soubirous reported visions of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle in 1858. The image belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection of glass negatives from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency active in the early twentieth century. The title comes from unverified information on the negatives or caption cards, and no date is recorded, so the scene is best read as a glimpse of a busy shrine town in that period.
