Park Row, the stretch of Manhattan running north from City Hall, was one of the city's best-known spots for street oratory, where soapbox speakers gathered to address passersby. This glass negative records an Industrial Workers of the World meeting held there. The I.W.W., founded in Chicago in 1905, was a radical labor union that organized unskilled and migrant workers and often drew attention with open-air speeches. The Bain News Service, a photo agency, made the negative, though the record gives no date for this particular scene.
