The name on this glass negative places a grand duke in Saxony, though the record itself flags the title as unverified. Wilhelm Ernst actually ruled Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, a small state in Thuringia, from 1901 until the German revolution forced his abdication in November 1918. The George Grantham Bain Collection was built from press photographs sold to newspapers, so portraits like this one were made for quick publication. The negative is 5 by 7 inches or smaller, a format that let photographers make several prints from one exposure.
