Little is recorded about this glass negative beyond its title, "Grand Duchess Xexia," which the Bain News Service supplied on the negative or its caption card and which has not been verified. The name most likely refers to Grand Duchess Xenia, a sister of Russian Tsar Nicholas II, whose public appearances drew press attention in the early twentieth century. Bain's New York agency sold news pictures of notable people to newspapers, so portraits like this were made for fast publication, and the 5 by 7 inch glass format reflects the plate cameras that working photographers of that era relied on.
