The title names a Duchess of Rutland, a British peerage title held by the Manners family, but the record does not say which duchess is shown or when the picture was made. The image survives as a small glass negative, five by seven inches or smaller, from the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain's New York-based news service supplied pictures of public figures and events to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its negatives were often captioned from information that was not always checked. Viewers should treat the identification as unverified.
