The caption on this glass negative names a Duchess of Sutherland, but the record does not say which holder of the title is shown, and the identification is unverified. Several women held the title over the years, and British peeresses were frequent subjects of American press photography in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers, produced much of its work in that period. Without a recorded date or photographer, the negative is best read as a trace of that press trade and its interest in society figures.
